Training for the Upcoming Ocean Swims

We are currently training for the upcoming Ocean Swimming season. Out Tuesday nights at 7.00pm and Thursday nights at 7.00pm program is designed to give you the stamina and technique for the events. If you want to give it a try, just pay your pool entry and you can join us for a free session to see if it suits you.
Also, we have restarted our Saturday morning training sessions at Torquay front beach. Just rock up at 8am and join the 30 to 50 swimmers doing laps of the yellow cans. Perfect solution to coping with anything the ocean throws at you.

A Late Starter

I started swimming late in life – all I had was a very poor freestyle – I dreamed of doing an open water swim but felt my likelihood of achieving this was diminishing as I was getting older.

I joined the Catfish squad at the age of 56 and now at 69 I have completed 12 open water events, including the Pier to Pub this year. The Catfish coaching improved my freestyle technique and taught me backstroke and breaststroke. The squad gave endurance and confidence.

My aim is to do 10 Pier to Pubs and achieve Sharkbait status – at 70!

About thirty years ago I used to take my children to swimming training in the early morning at about 6.00am, and as I watched them swim I became stiff and cold. At this stage it was beyond me to swim 25 metres, but seemed a good time to start to learn.

One day I read in the local paper that a branch of AUSSI was starting in Geelong, and anyone interested in squad swimming was welcome to join. Quite sure that everyone would be too good for me, I went along to see what happened. Everyone was very welcoming and encouraging so I decided to join.

Now many years later I am a confident but slow swimmer, and with the help of coaches I now like to swim in competitions travelling to many parts of Australia to take part.

An aim that really seemed beyond my capabilities was to take part in an Open Water Swim. This year five of those were completed, again very slowly but with much enjoyment.

Without the help of Master’s swimming I would never have been able to achieve this aim, so I encourage everyone to come along and have a try, you never know what you might be able to achieve.

What is AUSSI?

AUSSI is an acronym for Australian Union of Senior Swimmers International. This acronym was dropped from the name of the National organisation but still remains in Victoria’s name. Masters Swimming Australia is an Australia-wide association of adult swimming clubs, whose members (both men and women) swim regularly to keep fit and have fun. Masters Swimming Australia is also a member of the world-wide FINA family.

Why join masters swimming?

Experience shows that few people have enough drive to exercise regularly by themselves. masters swimming provides this by forming clubs where people with similar objectives can meet, talk, swim together, encourage one another and make new friends.

How good do you have to be to join a masters swimming club?

Masters swimming’s program is designed for everyone from those who can only just swim to the experienced swimmer. Everyone is most welcome.

What benefits are there in swimming?

Experts state that swimming is one of the most effective forms of exercise for:

1. Improving aerobic fitness
2. Resisting coronary disease
3. Lowering blood pressure
4. Relaxing after the tensions of work
5. Improving muscle tone, posture and general physical appearance

Swimming is ideal for those who fear that age or ill-health prevents them from participating in more vigorous sports or exercises. When swimming, your body is supported by the water, so there is no excessive stress on any one set of muscles, such as there is on the legs in running.

What sort of activities do the clubs run?

We swim regularly. Most clubs swim once or twice a week. All groups offer help and encouragement in improving your swimming technique and training program. Clubs will often have a social event either on a regular club night or on competition days. Many clubs have supper after club night or a “Happy Hour” or BBQ once a month. After interclub swims, the host club will organise a get-together. Most of us regard our swimming as a social activity!

As you improve, you may decide to swim for your club in competitions. These are really time trials with the results being divided into five-year age groups from 20-24 through to 90 years plus.

Events are conducted for all four strokes, medleys and teams (including mixed teams). The ten best times for each event and age group in Australia are published annually (National Top Ten), establishing a standard for all swimmers to measure their performance.

What are the alternatives to keeping fit with masters swimming but not racing competitively?

Just as important as swimming against others is the opportunity to see your fitness and your times improve. To encourage swimmers of all standards Masters Swimming Australia has award certificates that are achievable for everyone by virtue of effort over a period of time. To keep interest stimulated, the National Aerobics Club Pointscore encourages participation by all club members, regardless of ability. Aerobic swims make everyone a winner.

What is happening outside of Masters Swimming Victoria?

For those with the time and the means, regular tours are organised to other countries where other masters swimmers are active. Any member can join these tours, regardless of swimming ability, provided they are taking an active role in their club activities. Each Branch holds its own competitions and every year the National Championships are conducted on a rotational basis. This event is open to all and is not to be missed!
